Small Talk - ILO’s engagement with Indigenous and Tribal People

Organised by the ILO Internboard, Small Talks are interesting, wide-ranging, and exciting discussions and short lectures or presentations from various ILO experts and interns.

The Small Talk on ILO’s engagement with Indigenous and Tribal People on 4 June 2020 exposed the work of ILO in supporting the rights of indigenous and tribal people in the world. Present in more than 70 countries, Indigenous Peoples make up 15% of the world’s poor and face several challenges due to exclusion and inequalities. Additionally, the current COVID-19 crisis has disproportionately impacted Indigenous Peoples worldwide.

The ILO has played a leading historical role in recognising and promoting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Convention No.169, is a symbol of this engagement. It is the only international treaty open for ratification that deals exclusively with the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Maria Victoria Cabrera, the expert speakers and main author of ILO's most recent report on Indigenous People’s situation, explains the complexities of implementing the Convention No.169, adopted 30 years ago as part of ILO’s pursuit of social justice.
